Horses accumulate point over time as they train and show. An older horses will almost always have more points than a younger horse unless they are a really poor quality or weren't shown very often.

Foals do not train and thus do not do well in shows and their placement is just luck. The higher a horse's PT score the longer they will train and the more likely they are to move up into show levels that give out more points. Lower PT horses show horses are still good to have around if you are interested in competing on the Show Circuits of various clubs at multiple levels.
