What is DP?
  • Exactly that!
An example would be nice. Also what does it do/ what are the benefits(if any)?

From my understanding it is something to do with the coat.

    Thank you

  • DP stands for Dense Pheomelanin. It only effects red. It can not be seen in the gene testing. Horses like Liver chestnut and Chocolate Palomino occur when a horse has three darkening genes. The most common is some combination of sooty and dp. DP as just stated basically is a darkening gene for red pigment. For myself I like the really dark colors so DP has always been one of my favorite genes to play with. The easiest color to see it on is chestnut because it is so obvious when present especially because the name Liver will show up.
For examples this is my 2nd gen DP stallion who is Het DP
