Lots of Futurity Questions
  • I'm still new to the game and figuring things out so please be patient.

    1) When breeding my mare to a Futurity boy, does it make the most sense for him and my chance of being a top ten foal to breed to a higher papered mare? i.e., it doesn't typically make sense to breed to a foundation.

    2) Mares: do mares get on the leader boards by selling straw/embryos? Or being put up for public breeding?

    3) Now that we have started a new era even new accounts should have somewhat of a chance, correct? This would be the only time it really makes sense to breed foundation to foundation. At least for the next few months.

    4) What do players typically look for in a futurity prospect?

    Thanks!
  • By futurity prospect do you mean the stud? It helps to have some fun genes to attract others to breed to him, but bottom line, what matters the most is that other people breed to him. The most older offspring make the most points.

  • It's a numbers game. The more foals, the better, whether it's foundation mares or high-PT high-paper mares. I use foundation mares with others' Star+ studs all the time. I also snip almost everything, since the goal here is to get the best show scores. Altering a horse gives it a training boost, which helps to increase its show scores. I keep no colts from futurity pairings, and very few mares.
Folly's Fantasies #43484 (she/her): Horses, straws, and eggs from my Doubleskunk tribute herd are always free.
  • Minute- yes, I meant for stud or brood mare. It would make sense you'd want something that is marketable.

Thanks Folly for sharing. I'm wasn't sure if I'd be doing a disservice by putting futurity studs on foundation mares.

  • I don't think there is a big difference between using a foundation mare or one of a higher paper level. Now if you are breeding very poor quality foundations to a stallion and getting foals with very low PT scores then I imagine that would have an impact. What matters most is that foal are shown every week.

Mares can not be on the Futurity boards, they are only for stallions.

We started a new era in December, the next new era will be June. Each month is the beginning of a new year. For the futurities a foundation can still do well if their foals accumulate enough points. Stallion quality is a factor for the other boards where a foundation would not be the champion of a later era board against a *Star stallion.

I am not picky about futurity stallions. My futurity mares and foals are separate from my other programs and all I really focus on is era. I am a member of the breeding circle so I just tend to go through and use whatever stallions are available and need more foals to qualify. Color, size, and type aren't a big factor for me. If you are struggling to qualify a stallion then offer to do a straw swap, offer breedings at a reduced price, or offer an incentive to use your stallion(s).
  • As much as I'm tempted, I'm not going to do a futurity stud, but I'm breeding to other's studs. I have a small stable, so I can't do many. It makes sense to me to breed to young horses simply because that gives my colts a chance to excel.
The next year, to protect my investment, is probably good to breed back to that same stud.

Someone well connected, crafty, popular can get all their friends to breed to their studs, so sociability is a huge advantage.
And you do need to be willing to wait..as it will take months..

  • I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I've seen the posts and have been kicking around the idea. I've got a few boys that I would just love to see their foals. They are lined bred and I've only got a handful of lined bred mares, but they're not papered well enough to support the boot strap herd.
  • I may just post them to see if anybody would be happy with them in any of their projects.
