Would you cull your Inconsistent breeding stock?
  • I've got a couple mares and a stud or two that are inconsistent and I was wondering if you would cull them on that alone? What makes you spay/geld/sell a horse?
One of my boys is second generation, B papered, 9.3 PT, but inconsistent--and gorgeous to boot.

  • Is he better than both his mom and dad?

I have several inconsistent horses in my breeding program. If I get a foal that I love otherwise, but it's PT score is a bit low I will GMT it's consistency up to fix the PT score, but I generally don't geld on inconsistency alone. Some people feel differently, of course! :)

  • In terms of PT, he's in the middle (but on the higher side, only a few points fewer than his sire). He's a B, his sire's a C. Both parents are consistent.
I quite like him, so I might GMT.

  • You never judge a horse's breeding ability by it's PT.

  • PT only affects showing, correct?

  • So you would typically judge breeding stock by consistency and testing paper score? And superiority to their sire/dam? (And colour, of course!)

  • I try to avoid inconsistency in my breeding horses. It tends to give more inconsistent foals, and inconsistent foals test with a lower PT and are not as consistent in the Show ring. I have a few inconsistent stallions but I am trying to phase them out.
