    What makes a Liver Red or Chestnut, Liver? I ask because I bought two liver boys and I'm wondering If I could make them just a Red Roan and Red Dun.

    It is called Dense Pheomelanin(DP) is what makes a chestnut a liver. Two copies of DP will make a "black" liver, which is like your top boy, and one copy will make a liver (your second boy). To make these boys red/chestnut you would need to remove their copies of DP.

    Just a heads up, you cannot remove DP. You would need to breed it out down the line.

    Actually, you need 2 copies of sooty and one copy of DP to make liver, so I believe removing a copy of sooty would also work. But it shouldn't be hard to breed the liver out, either way. Chestnut without liver is pretty easy to find.
