DP gene(s)?
-
Hey guys!
So, I have recently jumped onto the DP bandwagon and I would love for someone to explain to me as much as possible about the dense pheomelanin. Mainly what I want to know is how do you tell they are DP from their genotype?
Thanks in advance!Majestic Gaits Farm

You can't tell a horse is DP for sure from its genotype because it's a hidden gene.
When it's unknown whether a parent has DP, you can speculate that a horse you have might be carrying it when that horse seems much darker or much redder (depending on base color) than another horse with the same base color and SSty that is known to not have DP in their pedigree. However, there is a range of colors within each coat combination that can make it difficult to separate a particularly dark SSty S chestnut from a particularly light DP dp Ssty S chestnut.
I had quite a few DP DP stallions in my herd, so I always knew all of their direct offspring were at least DP dp...but then when you get to the gen 3s I could really struggle with some to figure out whether I thought they had inherited DP or not. Especially when you start getting into the agoutis or the diluting genes, it can get very complicated very quickly! But sometimes you would swear up and down a filly missed DP and the suddenly she will produce an obviously DP foal....it's fun!Thanked by 1Dixieland789 -
Like Cheers said you have to have an eye for it.
I don't breed DP as heavily as I used too but it's always been a favorite color/gene of mine.
If you need some examples you can pm and I'll show you my horses----

I am very forgetful so if I owe you anything but am taking to long please send me a PM. I don't get on to play the game as often as I once did but I am usually most active during the 2nd and 3rd week of each monthThanked by 1Dixieland789 -

DP Questions
Above is a link to an older discussion that has examples linked. I also jumped on the DP bandwagon recently because of the gorgeous Freaky Friday rank specials I got, so I investigated for some examples. I hope it helps. :)Thanked by 1Dixieland789 -
