Any way to discern DP on black horses?
  • Is there any possible way to tell if DP is on a black horse besides trying to add it in the gene modifier? I’ve been thinking about it for a long while, but can’t seem to come to any other conclusions. Thoughts? Ideas?
  • A couple of chestnut test mares.

  • You can breed it to a freaky Friday. I can't remember if they're hom or het. But once you see the foal you'll know if it got DP from one or both parents. Het DP is very similar to S+S (at least that's what I've gathered) and then Hom DP is like S+Ssty (sorta, don't quote me on it though :)) ) but that's on the other server I think.
  • As Seaswell says, the only other way to test would be to breed the horse to genetic combinations that'll result in a foal that you could tell whether they got dp or not. Best to use a hom sooty no dp, or hom sooty hom dp chestnut, so you always know what the chestnut will pass down, and just need to see if the black contributed any darkening genes

  • You can only use a chestnut to test if the black horse in question is heterozygous black (Ee). If your horse is EE, use homozygous sooty bay mares and see if any come out super dark or dapply compared to a normal sooty bay.

  • Since DP only affects red pigment, there's definitely no way to tell by phenotype (appearance). :D Crossing it with chestnut mares is the only way, as people have mentioned above.

  • All Freaky Fridays are hom DP, even the black ones. This is a hom DP bay from a liver sire and a black FF mare for comparison. :)

  • Thanks so much y’all! I’ll have to find a hom sooty chestnut stallion to match her with, to see if she throws anything fun. These are all awesome ideas and insights!
