I need help with my pasture sorting
  • Ok, so i've added 2 new foundation studs last month that I'll be breeding starting next season, so i have to do a major reorganization of my pastures to try yo accommodate 100 new mares. I don't have enough to keep all mares in pasture full time, so usually my favorite studs get mares with a full bonus and the rest just rotate through. My problem is my two new boys brings my foundation stud count to 12, with 5 being "favorites" and 5 others that are used every season. And that's not even including my lined horses that i also really want a full bonus on (i.e. 5 & 6 gen especially), and my Bootstrap herd. So I either need to cut some lines, downsize some in all lines, figure out which ones get full bonus and who doesn't, or go back to no full time pasture bonus for anyone. Anyone want to help me work through this?

    My Pasture Space:
    4) 100 acre (including primary)
    4) 60 acre
    2) 30 acre
    5) 10 acre

    Total space: 750

Total Intact Breeding Age Mares for next season: 1670
    - about 550 Foundation
    - about 170 Bootstrap

  • Holy cow Batman, that’s a lot of mares!

I think probably my first step would be, the bootstrap herd no longer gets pasture bonus. That solves that little issue, opening up that room for your higher gen mares to stay in pasture.

I would also maybe move your foundations, with the exception of your new boys that don’t have any second gen and beyond foals, to a rotating 15 day pasture bonus. That will take some timing to make sure the second group gets enough bonus before the season ends, but not terribly difficult (just time consuming). So that opens up quite a bit of space there, cutting out half the foundies from pasture full time. (The day you rotate your foundies would be the perfect time to throw your bootstrap mares in and breed them before setting up the second group of foundies.)

And then maybe possibly going through and tightening up your second gen and beyond groupings. Cull out inconsistencies, genes that aren’t as desirable or sizes that aren’t as desirable. You could also look at where lines could overlap, and one season this group of second gen (or whatever gen) mares gets bred by X line stallion, and next season they get bred to Y line stallion. That way there isn’t any need to pull mares out of pasture, they keep the bonus, and both lines are getting foals.
  • I found it helped to cut down my number of lines. I had 7 different lines, and it was too much juggling to be fun. Now I have 4, because I moved all my fantasy/ice into one line, and whacked the brown and liver lines together, and culled accordingly (all the liver mares with Agouti got sold or moved to my mushroom line, and studs from both groups got a hard cull).

So you might think about how you can reduce or combine your breeding goals, so that you can cut the number of studs and do less mare shuffling.
  • Bootstrap herd already doesn't get the bonus.

I can't really combine lines more than they already are. I have a light bone line that requires sooty, a mix bone line that requires no sooty and a draft/cob line that prefers sooty. Then my bootstrap herd is separate.

  • Another idea is leave your Foundation mares in a barn so they no longer get pasture bonus. Except your favorites, or if you want a higher number of intact offspring from a specific stallion so his mares stay in. That would cut down on the number of 2g foals that are intact. But would leave space for all of the higher gen horses to get the pasture bonus, since it sounds like you want to focus on them for a bit.
