Staggered pasture breeding?
  • Hey all,

I have a bit of a conundrum, and am wondering if anyone else has done staggered pasture breeding?

I have a 10-mare pasture for my ExPerf mares, and have about 18 in my pastures (10 in the ExPerf pasture, 8 ExPerf mares in my primary pasture alongside 30+ non ExPerf mares). My idea was to place an ExPerf stallion in the ExPerf pasture, and not place a stallion in the primary pasture, so that when I hit “breed all pastures” it only breeds the ExPerf pasture, then I can shuttle the mares through from the primary pasture into the ExPerf pasture and breed to that stallion. Ultimately, I don’t want to lose the pasture bonus I have on them, but also don’t have cash to buy another pasture for a hot minute.

Has anyone done this for their pastures? How did it work? How did your BOP email(s?) go? Any info would be so helpful! Thank you!
  • I do this on a regular basis. I have several different breeding goals so I need to strategically move around my studs and mares into an empty pasture. I have several pasture that house the mares and leave one 10 acre pasture empty to moves mares into when I go to breed. It takes longer but I am able to do specific pairings I require. As long as you are just moving mares between pastures and not taking them out of the pasture at any time then they won't lose their pasture bonus. Unfortunately you will only get one BOP email when you do this though. Make sure that any other pastures you own don't have a stud in them at the time of breeding or you will accidentally breed any mares in that pasture as well.

  • Yup! Absolutely the best way to do it!
  • The email will only go out for the first round

  • Yep. I usually bred my highest Generation main line pasture first. I don't necessarily need to know which of my bootstraps is Best in Pasture, but I do want to know which of my main line foals is best. But Confluence is right, you only get one e-mail.

  • I do this all the time too. I get a little tired of moving mares around, but if you have multiple goals, it's the only way.
  • Thank you everyone!! I’m glad to know this isn’t beyond the pale for strategy. I’ll have to make sure all my other non-primary pastures are lined up at first breeding so I can get a true BOP, vs a “best of ten” lol
