Not sure what to do...
  • I have a horse that I absolutely love, but she can't do eventing(which is what I really would like to learn/compete in). She's older, and would only really be good for a trail home. I really want her to go to a good home. I don't have the option to just buy another horse. Help?
  • Would you be able to lease her out? How old is older? There are also places that do therapeutic riding that could use quiet horses.

  • I was thinking something similar to Confluence, could you even possibly see if there is a riding program near you that would be willing to do a dual lease? As in, you lease out one of their younger showing horses and they lease your older trail horse?
  • Something else to consider is leasing/selling to a 4-H kid, or someone who’s wanting a beginner horse. (I don’t know if she’d be good for that sort of thing but it’s an idea) if the family has more than one child then you could possibly find her a good home for the rest of her life. I know where I am people are always looking for good solid beginner horses, a horse that can do a easy show (walk, trot, lope, turn stop), a been there done that horse that their children can be safe on. Or an older person who can’t afford to fall off a horse, but doesn’t want to give up riding.

The horse doesn’t have to be 100% sound just mostly sound, to do a lot of that. I knew a 15yr old gelding with arthritis he could get up and slow lope/trot a barrel pattern for his young rider, and at home she could ride him bareback without anybody worrying that he would do anything silly. He was a very loved horse till the day he died.

What I’m trying to say is I doubt that you will have a problem finding her a good home.

If you don’t mind me asking why isn’t it an option to purchase another horse?
  • She is not a show horse, trust me I tried!(She freaked out and I ended up being body slammed by her into the fence of the arena). She would possibly make a good therapy horse, but I'm not sure of any programs like that around here. Also, she is 18 as of 2019. Although she doesn't act it(as in she has a fair amount of energy, you could ride on the trails all day and she doesn't get tired!)
  • If you are concerned about her going to a good home, consider a lease situation where you can have some oversight of the situation (or a lease-to-own, if you want to end up selling her). Visiting her in her new home, going and watching a riding lesson with her new owner, or even asking the new owner to use the same trusted farrier, vet, or riding instructor as you can help make sure she is cared for. If you are keeping her at a larger barn with lots of boarders, you can even request that she stay at the same facility so that you can keep an eye on her yourself.

I tried leasing out my gelding to a high schooler when I went away to college, and we requested they use the same farrier. Honest communication with the family we leased him to, as well as input from my farrier, gave me peace of mind about his situation and helped determine when it wasn't a good fit and he needed to just come home.

If you are interested in donating her to a therapy program, this link has a directory for all the PATH-certified therapy centers in the US, if you happen to live stateside:

It's nice to be back! :)

  • Thinking about it, she might make a good mounted shooting(or archery) horse! I would probably consider a lease to own situation. Right now she is just at my house so whoever leased her would have to pay for board at a facility
