Concussion Conundrum.
  • ... And this is the downside to wearing armor that makes you look far more stockier and more intimidating than you are... One of the new guys who hadn't fought me before gave me far more of a hit than real me can take the first sword fighting practice of this semester of school and I went flying backwards landing full force on the back of my head on a hard spot... and up until that moment I had been anti helmet, so I wasn't wearing one. Most are foam anyway so wouldn't have helped me much in that situation anyway.

That was almost a week ago. I am recovering well from what I remember from previous concussions... though that is with understanding that the others were mild baby concussions and this one is not. (Stage 2, we are honestly shocked I didn't black out) Sorry for playing assuming, but many horse people have had concussions. How is it like handling the emotions coming out of one and what do you do to manage the mood swings? I didn't really think about it before, but completely unrelated there was a very emotional experience right before then which I very thankfully didn't forget. I have been having fun for the most part not having emotions this past week, but I do know this is impacting my friends having me be off right now, and I am concerned that me going into major mood swings right now will really put certain ones into a tailspin when really is not their fault and I am trying really hard not to hurt them right now in light of what happened... But cutting off seeing them right now would be bad too. What sort of things do you guys think I could expect and how do I handle it?... And the will to homework is nonexistent in the middle of everything... Ug!

  • That sounds icky! I'm glad you are ok!

If you haven't already, make sure your friends know that your mood swings are the result of your concussion so they know what to expect. Hopefully they can give you some grace!

  • I'm sorry that you're going through this. My best recommendation is like HT said, let your friends know what is going on in an open manner.

Also check with your schools resources. They should have people in place such as counselors to talk to about what you are going through. Your school may also be able to provide accommodations until you are medically cleared by a doctor from your concussion.

The biggest thing I see academics-wise in my job dealing with student athletes, is that they often don't realise what services the school provides until it's too late.

If your school doesn't have someone to work through this with you, the school or a medical doctor might be able to recommend someone.

If you are able to get additional help from school or professional counselors outside of school, be sure to let yours friends know that you are working through your symptoms. Sometimes knowing that a person is actively working on getting better, it is easier to be understanding. It sucks that people are that way sometimes, but you should be focused on getting better and back to normal life.

I hope this is helpful information!
