Culling breeding stock based on PT?
-
Hello all!
I am currently working on a line based off of real life PRE horses. I want an exclusive line where I cull both for breeding AND performance. I initially had my cut off for 2nd gens to be passing SBA, Red paper level, and PT > 10.3 consistent but since I am starting with Perfect Foundation breeding stock, this seems much harder to get. Does anyone else cull by PT? Do I have my bar set to high for a second generation, or do I need to change stallions?
Thanks everyone!ID#43150 | she/her

If you are starting with Perfect Foundation mares and stallions, I think a 10.3 PT cutoff might be a tad high (just based off my individual breeding experience). I would think if they hit 10PT I would be happy, and just choose the highest PT colt that was STS out of the bunch to keep.

I dont have much to add but I'll be excited to see how your project turns out. I used to have a wonderful older PRE mare

I would cull based on AFPT rather than the mares personal PT that will tell you their quality better. Make sure they have at least 3 foals and calculate the average PT of them and cull the lowest producing mares first until you clear enough for the upcoming mares rather than have a firm PT score which may or may not be achieved by an unlucky roll of the virtual dice.Breeding even generation Grullos with IceThanked by 1kintara

Yep what Bandit said, I wouldn't worry about PT at all for your gen2's, doesn't tell you anything about their breeding ability. But when you get to gen3 the foals PT will help you cut down the gen2 mares. I'd want my gen2 stallions to be superior to an exceptional foundation. Definitely do-able with perfect foundation parents. Sets you up to be more likely to get Blues/A's in gen3
