I agree -- I think you're seeing Nexus color variation under Tobiano markings.
Here's a het Axiom plain black girl that has a similar pale front to dark back fade. I think something like this is what's causing the similar colors under the Tobiano with your cutie?

I know that but I have never had one come out with 3 different colors before. I think I am gonna have to look at the dam again. Try this cross again next season.

Could it be the black dun Rabicano coming out with the Tobiano?

Hom nexus I think makes the color inverted. So a black based horse would look lighter in hom nexus, like her black based sire which is a grey. And the dam is a red based chestnut, so she would be darker like the black nexus color under the Tobiano markings she carries. I’m not sure why the foal seems lighter towards her withers and forelegs and darker towards her rump though.

I love the multi colored nexus! I got this one and was so sad when he didn't pass testing but is one pretty show pony!

Gene Guide Update!
The sunshine gene, previously known only from one line of Standardbreds has been discovered in a TWH. The gene guide has been updated with this new information. Sunshine may be much wider spread than originally thought.1/27/2026 3:58 AM EST
