Should he have papered star?
  • So I bred one of my blue papered mares mares to a star papered stud. She was a high blue so I figured I had a good chance of getting a star/gold baby from them. I was so pleased when the foal got the gene I wanted and even more so when he passes BA. I then papered him and he papered A. I was a bit disappointed but he was so pretty I figured I keep him anyway. Then just to see what would happen I comparison tested against his sire and he tested AGA. If he is A papered how can he be AGA his star papered dad? Here is the colt for reference.

  • I think that would mean that he is a high A and sire must be low *star? Not sure but that's how I would understand it

  • Comparison testing isn’t exactly precise.

Say for example the point range of breeding ability is 1-125.
    Failed is 1-25
    C is 26-50
    B is 51-75
    A is 76-100
    Star is 101-125

Now say for example comparison testing parameters are set so that if two studs are within 10 points of each other the test says they are as good as each other.

Now say you have three studs:
Sam has a breeding ability of 78 he is an A paper.
Copper has a breeding ability of 97 he is an A paper.
Tug has a breeding ability of 102 he is a star paper.

If you compare Tug to Sam they have a point difference of more than 10 so the test would say Tug is superior.
If you compare Tug to Copper they are only 5 points apart so the test would say they are about as good as each other. Though really Tug is slightly better and is star instead of A papered.

This is just an example of how it works. Only Ammit knows the actual point spread and parameters that run the test and breeding ability. Ultimately this is just a mathematical visual for you Of how your A boy is a “high A” and your star boy is a “low star”.

  • You now know the colt is a very high A and the sire is a very low star.
