What Causes White-Out Appaloosas?
-
I am trying to figure it out because, although some like it, (@JustaSaddleTramp I am looking at you :P ) it is not my thing.
Both my new snowflake studs are throwing it, especially my champagne boy who I spent a fair amount on, and I am wondering what the genetic contributers are to it so I can try to see if I am able to avoid it.
Or is it governed by invisible factors like spot size and varnish is?
Here are some examples:

I can be very scatterbrained and forgetful so if I don't get back to you in a decent amount of time just poke me. -
Two copies of Lp will make the blanket white as opposed to spotted. The size is the blanket is determined by PATN or no PATN (+unseen factors?)ID 108Thanked by 1BlackWyld

If the horse is double PATN, the blanket size will cover the entire body, and if Lp is Homozygous, there won't be many spots.
-
I do also see some other white genes here so those will be at play, too. They won't affect Lp, but they will block what spots and areas you might otherwise see. :PThanked by 1BlackWyld

Okie dokie. :)
Thank you!
That makes sense.
I think I wasn't factoring in the hom lp.
I have not paid too much attention to my appys' genetics before other than the basics.ID# 47364

Okay! Appy rundown time. :D Anything hom snowflake will turn white in this game from what I've seen. There is also a varnish gene (same location as snowflake) that helps turn them white and can be present with or without Lp and white them out too. I personally wish both were visible genes so I could breed out varnish in my herd. The more I look at my pretty snowflake babies who turned white, the more I think maybe snowflake is not for me and I just need nexus in my appy lines. :))
As for the rest, appy complex is really very predictable. One Lp gives a small (sometimes very small!) spotted blanket, and one Lp plus one PATN gives a larger spotted blanket that may go up to the neck and shoulders. One Lp plus two PATN gives leopards with spots all over from a maximum blanket. Two Lp (aka homozygous appy) with no PATN gives a solid white blanket (snowcap) that can be very small, two Lp with one PATN gives a large solid white blanket, and two LP with two PATN (aka double homozygous appy) gives what is known as a fewspot appy... Mostly white with color possible on feet, face, mane, and/or tail with few or no dark appy spots.
Some of your babies above are fewspots, but the pale silver champagne roan macchiato babies aren't, they just have other genes helping the appy genes along towards whiteout. If you reroll that second boy you could likely get a smaller blanket on him, and possibly on the two silver champagne macchiato babies, though they have splash and spM which sometimes throws a lot of white when combined to give that lovely went swimming in white paint look. :))~*~ Justa ~*~

... And other people answered while I had that in a tab typing between doing other stuff, so I'm late to the party and didn't have to bother. Typical! :))~*~ Justa ~*~

It shows as a plus sign just like the gene that is no blanket, but it will make a bigger blanket than just PATN1 by itself. This thread on Bluegrass has examples and an explanation about the gene.

As far as I’m aware PATN2 does not exist in this version of the game any longer. Occasionally the allele will show up but it’s a bug when it does I think. @ConfluenceFarms am I correct on that?Thanked by 1BlackWyld

I don't have an HJ1 account and I can't read Chrystal's link. Can someone copy-paste or give me a rundown? PATN2 sounds interesting!ID 43830
It's nice to be back! :)

Throwing a quick question out here, is there no way to search for PATN?

I've done it by saving back a GMT token and then pulling up the horse in question. When the horses genes show up the PATN will show if they carry it. Be careful if you decide to adjust any of the + genes. Sometimes it can hide a PATN2 which shows a way larger blanket than PATN1.

Oh that's a good idea (not sure if I'll have the restraint though ). I haven't heard of PATN2 before, is it something you know you have just by eyeballing the blanket, or is there a trick to it?

Normally, it asks if you want to change + to + or + to PATN1, if it's PATN2. If they have almost a full blanket and only one PATN1 it's probably PATN2.

Oh, by the way, I'm not so good at saving them either.

I'm assuming PATN2 has a larger blanket when a horse is hom ++ or hey +PATN1

So @Blu now you have me curious about PATN 2 lol I first thought this girl was a full leopard, hence the name lol, but she only carries 1 PATN1 gene with a minimal WF and no Kit. Would she be an example of PATN2? The only thing that really gives her away are her dark legs.

Yeap. At least with what I've found on my own girls, it sure looks like it.

I just fell into The Appaloosa Projects blogs lol pages and pages of information on patn1 and 2. Even theoretical patn 3 and 4. Very interesting

As you can see, the blankets are bigger on some, even though they're only het PATN. -
Patn2 doesn't exist anymore. If it shows up it's likely a bug. The link below even has Ammit commenting that it was a dead theory.
