The Origin of the Stygian Cob

Long ago, when the world was still young and the veil between realms was thin, there was no true boundary between night and day. Twilight stretched endlessly, a land of shadows bathed in silver glow. In this liminal hour, mortals often lost their way—wandering too far, some were claimed by the fae, while others vanished into the mists forever.

The goddess of dusk, Nysera, wept for these wandering souls. She longed to give them a guide—something steadfast, neither of full night nor full day, but of twilight’s essence. From her tears she shaped the first herd of Stygian Cob, forging them with coats the color of shadow and manes like strands of moonlight.

Nysera whispered to them:
"You shall be guardians of the threshold. With strength enough to carry the weary, and gentleness enough to calm the fearful, you will walk where mortals falter. The wicked you will confound, but the pure-hearted you will guide safely home."

And so it was that the Stygian Cobs were loosed into the mortal world. Farmers found them waiting at the edges of misty fields at dawn. Wanderers claimed they appeared on forest paths, leading them out of danger. Some say even now, if you are lost in the gloaming and call upon Nysera, a white-maned, dark-coated pony may step out of the fog to guide you.

But beware—the tales also say that if your heart is heavy with cruelty or falsehood, the Stygian Cob will not lead you home. Instead, it will carry you deeper into the mists, to places where time itself runs strange, and mortals are seldom seen again.
