Let’s Play HorseGeneticsGame - a follow along guide to building an account from scratch.

I created a brand new account on May 28, 2025 called RedRiverRanch(#61320) on the Forest server. With this account I am going to extensively document everything I do every month so you can see the strategies I am using to build up the account. I hope people find this a helpful resource. As we go along if you have any questions about what I am doing or why please ask. This account is an open book.

Rules:
RedRiverRanch is a 100% normal account. It receives no outside funding or assistance, and has no access to anything any other normal member does not have. I only have my knowledge of the game.

Normal members can buy things for USD but I am doing a “no spend” challenge with this account to show how it can be done. I can trade hbs for USD items at a rate of 200k hbs to 1 USD. I will do this trade by destroying the hbs, that way no members have to send me actual money to support this account.

No premium upgrade until December. First, not everyone has access to premium so I want to show how it can be done without it, and secondly playing on basic allows me to spot bugs I would not normally see.

All stallions on this account will be available to the public each season.

Any foals born on this account will be entered into their respective era leaderboards. I want to show everyone real world example strats for getting on the leaderboards. That said this account will not enter any foals in any color clubs. This account will have some limited futurity participation for example purposes but I won’t be focusing heavily on them.

Starting in June
I started this account in June which is a huge advantage when spinning up a new account. In June and December there are Random Acts of Gifting, special herd helpers each day, and create events. All of which I took advantage of to grow this account as quickly as possible. If you are starting an account on a different month the strategies still apply but you will need to wait until June/December to use the strategies specific to those months

At the start I was using RRR as my stable prefix but ended up switching to 3R after about a week.

Pointed Creates
I won’t go in depth about what pointed creates are and the rules about them, see the FAQ for that, but I will talk about my general strategy. My goal was to get to 60k held points and to do so with the smallest number of horses possible. As a new account, space is limited and cash is vital so process was as follows:

1) Create a group of yearlings either until I am out of stall space, or out of cash. Yearlings have more years to live so have higher lifetime payouts.
2) Any horse with less than 200 pointsI put up for sale for roughly their lifetime payout. If a horse had a lifetime payout of less than 3k I just tossed them in the auction. At the start I made a forum post advertising these horses but eventually I found that wasn’t really necessary. I never sold a horse with over 200 points unless it was a valuable rank special.
3) I kept creating horses until I had 60k held points. I made sure to purchase no horses during this time to get the most out of the 60k.

In the end It took roughly 170 creates to hit my 60k.
I sold 49 pointed horses to other players for a total amount of 462,450.
49 horses cost me 122,500 hbs to create, netting me a proffit of 339,950 hbs from pointed horse sale.
All 219 pointed creates cost me 546,500 hbs which means my net cost for creating 60k in points was 84,059 hbs when sales profits is figured in. Not bad!

Buying An Upgrade
As soon as I had 375,000 hbs I invested it right into a basic upgrade. Simply doing the achievement tasks easily covered the cost and the increase in weekly pay, auto training, and more barn space was insanely helpful. I would not recommend playing without it.

Buying Barn Space
Even with the upgrade I would not have the stall space for my 170 pointed creates, and I was going to need a heck of a lot more horses than that. Because of selling pointed creates, a generous RAoG gift from HighstormFarm, and selling rank specials I was able to buy a 250 stall barn pretty quickly for 83 Ivs (1,037,500 hbs).

Getting my first 250 stall barn was huge because it let me fill it with 250 creates a day to auction. It was even easier once I purchased my second 250. In all I was able to afford three 250 stall barns, and I purchased two 100 stall barns and a 50 stall barn, bringing me just up to the 1000 non primary stall threshold before I start having to pay extra tax on purchased stall space. In hindsight I would have purchased a 4th 250 instead of the smaller but they will still come in handy. The 15 stall barn was from an achievement so does not count as part of my 1k stalls.

My next goal is to save up 333 IVs (4,162,500 hbs) to pick up my first 1k stall barn.

RoAG Participation
I was listed in RoAG for a little while there. Thank you so much to HighstormFarm who sent me 500k to get started on barn space, and a ** gold era 15 mare who is the cornerstone of my upcoming high era bootstrap line.

Selling Rank Specials
Being anniversary month there were ranks specials to create every day. I made sure to log in daily to collect and sell that days rank special. For rank specials that had been seen before I used the Herd Helper Collection page to see the average price then roughly doubled that when I put the horse for sale. I had no issue selling them at these prices and most sold in just a few hours.

For brand new herd helpers I tended to wait a day and see what they had sold for the prior day. Sometimes I would skim through all the horses with that herd helper in the game looking for sold ones to see what prices they were getting. Most new ones I found could be sold for 200 to 300k.

I sold 27 rank special horses for a total of 4,945,000 hbs.
The average sale price was 183,000 hbs
I paid 67,500 for the creates making my net profit of 4,877,500 hbs.

Clearly rank special sales made up the bulk of my income for the month.

Sea Pony Fishing
Since it was June I was able to create 250 horses a day in the hunt for sea ponies.

In total created and auctioned 5340 horses.
I created a total of 103 sea ponies, 1 candy pony and 1 candy sea pony for a total of 105 gmts earned.

Since almost all horses created were auctioned back to the game I paid next to nothing to create all these horses, only time. The lottery paid out massively for me while creating these horses. I averaged roughly 2 to 3 million in lottery earnings every week from sea pony fishing. I won the million hb lottery at least 2 times that I know of.

Breeding Goals
The only breeding that will be happening on this account is breeding for the purposes of making a massive show herd. I have a goal of 2500 horses with 14+ pt. To achieve this I plan to have a few double boosted over cap stallions and 50 single boosted over cap mares for each to breed them too. That means there is a lot of cloning in my future so right now I am focusing on producing era 15 horses with 1 gmt cost genes (which are free to clone).

Era 15 will be my “blood stock” era, that I use to boost out of. Era 13 being the eventual landing space for the bulk of my show herd.

June Breeding
I worked on two “breeding projects” in June.

My most critical was my era 15 project. I wanted to establish this program as quickly as possible. I was gifted the below mare, but I am sure I could have made an ISO post and purchased a mare as well. I GMTd her so she was not homozygous for any expensive genes.

HF6 Reef Point E15

I was able to get 3 foals out of her during the breeding season using embryo collection. Because I had no 30 day pasture mares for transfers I had to max out all 3 of them but it was worth it to help establish my program. Her two fillies ended up loaded with homozygous expensive genes so not perfect for me but still they will come in very useful for growing my era 15 numbers.

I also picked up 5 cap (or near cap) ** gold mares. Some I picked up at auction, some I purchased from the sales board. Era 0 ** gold mares are often readily available for cheap prices. Some I paid as little as 2750 hbs for. They are not the era I want to be in but era only matters for the LB not for showing so I am still happy to have them. I paired them with double boosted studs. They gave me 19 show foals last season including 2 with 14+ PTs.

Boosted Stallion

3R14 Maximum Flag

I now own my first boosted stallion. The only cost-to-clone gene I could not get off him was a copy of DP, but I love DP so no problem there. Right now I don’t have access to cloning but I am planning ahead for December so I want to keep his genetics cheap. The 2.5 million investment to boost him was a big one, he costs more than a 250 stall barn, but he is going to be instrumental in getting my high era show horse program off the ground.

Buying Rescue and auction horses
In order to rapidly grow my show points I purchased as many high pointed horses as I could. I did not worry at all about age I just purchased what I thought would earn me hbs. In total I picked up 255 horses, 18 of which died at rollover. They account for about 200,000 p of my point increase this month.

July Breeding:
I started creating embryos in July right away on the first. I then hung onto all those embryos until I had mares with 30 day pasture bonus to implant them into. That got me a number of cap quality era 15 fillies that I will be using next season with my 5% boosted stud. (I used 5 of my gmt stash to turn the colts into fillies).

In total I bred 19 foals this season. I kept zero stallions, and 6 fillies, all era 15. My 13 higher era foals I altered to use as show stock.

July Sales
I sold 15 horses this month. A combination of the special herd helper shares and random rank specials I created during the month. This netted me a total of 2,737,627 extra hbs in the budget which I use to purchase my first 1k stall barn.

July Purchases
I purchased 635 horses in total.

-33 where purchased from the lined rescue
-174 where purchased from the foundation rescue
-The entire rest where purchased from other players, mostly the auction house.

I focused my purchases on young high pt horses, and horses with a lot of points regardless of age. The bulk of my purchases where 17+ aged horses. I was able to get most of these senior horses with no one else bidding on them. They also won me a large handful of gmts this month which means these senior horses where an amazing investment.

August Plans
My stallion 3R14 Maximum Flag is now of age so I want to focus on getting show foals from him by breeding him back to his dam. I have a number of low era ** gold mares that will be using outside double boosted over cap straws on. Any of my surrogate mares left over when embryos are done will also see Maximum Flag. I want to start producing the horses that are going to win me breed prestige points in the future.

August Breeding:
My boosted stallion 3R14 Maximum Flag came of age this season so I really put him to work. He sired 237 foals this past month, 223 for me. I kept every single foal. I used him to create a ton of embryos from my ** gold mares, using 30 day pasture surrogates as much as I could.

I then bred him to some 150+ random mares that where just in my account. My hope is to produce a large number of gold circuit foals with him in addition to the platinum foals for the lb down the line.

I kept zero stallions this season and 14 Maximum Flag ** gold daughters.

August Sales

I purchased 708 horses in total.

-The entire rest where purchased from other players, mostly the auction house.

The auction competition was pretty intense early in the month but by the end of the month it seemed other players had gotten distracted and I had no competition to bid on hundreds of high pointed seniors. I did lose a lot of horses this year, most those I purchased back in June and July, but buying seniors seems like a very solid early strategy.

September Plans
I used a fair number of era zero ** gold mares with Max this season because I did not have a lot of mares for him. I now have 9 ** gold era 15 mares so my plan is to only pull embryos from them and just pasture cover him with my era 0 mares.

I feel like 150k a day is a good place to build an account from so I will only look to buy half as many seniors this year to keep my numbers steady. I want to start transitioning to younger horses that take less maintenance. I will probably use foundation rescue horses to fill the gap while I am waiting for my home breds to start aging into points.

September Breeding:
My boosted stallion 3R14 Maximum Flag sired less foals this year (144 versus 237 last year) but the quality was markedly higher. I kept 35 ** gold daughters this year versus 14 last year. I also kept 11 *gold daughters to use as show horses and bootstrap breeders later on.

This is less foals than I maybe should have produced but with so many **gold mares coming of age in October I was not too concerned with foal numbers.

I sold two rank special horses for a combined 100k.

August Purchases
I purchased 105 horses down from 708 last year.

I had a massive boon finding this 15 PT double boosted **gold mare on the boards.

She should produce some really impressive foals for me, strong enough to get my breed in the Best of Breeds list in 2026. She also is winning in 9W and still training so she will just keep getting better in the shows.

I purchased way less show horses than I wanted this year but there was very little to buy in the auction houses. Instead I invested in that double boosted mare and a new barn.

LB GMT wins
I did very well at the leaderboards this year by timing my show entries do get an extra show in. As a reminder I don't enter any horses in the leaderboards. I just leave them as they come to be. All these awards (minus a few era 14 ones from my stud) are just senior horses people have auctioned off and I picked up on the cheap.

October Plans
I would like to get 300 foals on the ground from Max this year. I should be able to get around 150 of those foals from my **gold band and the rest from lower level crosses. I am particularly excited for that double boosted mare's foals. I may try to find some double boosted straws for her.

I need to get my daily bonus back over 150k. I am not sure yet how I want to get there but it will take some purchasing of horses for sure. With 600 senior horses to my name I will be expecting to lose around 150 next season as well.

I want to point out how I am always focusing on growing the strength of my showing herd with this account. Even when I was unable to buy show horses I did not make a new line. I am laser focused on always getting more stall space better show horses. Fancy projects can come after this account is solidly producing income.

Income is easy to get in this came if you focus on investing in income growth.

October Notes:
My goal last season was to produce 300 foals from Max, I managed 361!
I used the eggs from my double over cap mare with double over cap straws to produce my very first 15 PT foals.

I did do some auction purchasing this past season to get my daily bonus up to 175k just to minimize the drop off from rollover. I am looking forward to no longer having to auction hunt, but my first home breds are only 6 years old with the best still having only 340 points. It will be several game years until for before I can start to really lean on them.

In October I did a major overhaul of my mare band. I now have over 200 lined mares with blue papers or better so I aggressively culled all my lower paper mares. Since my goal is a big profitable mare band all those red and yellow paper mares will just drag my stats down. Once I have enough gold mares I will cull the blues as well and so on.

LB GMT wins

-I picked up a futurity foal gmt from a straw I was gifted back in June.
-3R14 Maximum Flag was unexpectedly back to era 14 champion stud after falling to second last season.

-I also took champion and 2nd in era 17 Silver Circuit from some random foundation rescue horses I picked up,

November Plans
I will keep breeding my double over cap era 0 mare to era zero studs this season in hopes of some futrity wins in a few months. I want to try and get as many foals as possible out of her this year For my best chance at the futurity I need a higher era but it's worth giving it a shot since I will be breeding her anyways.

I ended up settling on this stud for her. He is young, double boosted and had a 1hb stud fee.

I had been doing a lot of embryo breeding with Max to get my numbers up but I am going to be transitioning to more pasture breeding and straws with him for this season to save hbs. I want to invest in a premium upgrade next season so I can clone max and get some home made double boosted horses.

I added 500 stalls last season and lost 250 horses at roll over. With 750 stalls to fill this year I will probably be buying a lot of foundation rescue horses to breed once then alter them and their foals to toss in the show barn. I will probably have to do some auction hunting as well.

November Notes:
This season marked double milestones for my barn. For the very first time I did not need to purchase senior auction horses to make up numbers. I also met my goal of surviving 6 months without a primary upgrade and was able to unlock one just at the end of the month.

I can not drive home enough what a big deal it is to hit the point where my home breds are generating points fast enough to keep up with my income needs. I only have a few hundreds seniors from the auctions left, so every season their deaths are less and less of an issue. Getting here is huge and will mean my barn can now concentrate on paying for its upgrades, barn space and getting double boosted stock.

I used the money I saved by not buying show horses or barns this season to make some major future investments. I paid 200k per USD for a month of premium upgrade, (about 2.1 million hbs). Once I unlocked the premium I milked every IV I had been saving over the past month to clone my single boosted stallion 3 times. I also sold the recent rank specials to help me net enough income to boost one of the clones. I know have my own double over cap stud for bootstrap and leaderboard breeding. I am too broke to afford boosting the other two clones yet but I will before they turn three in January.

Max produced 269 foals last season for many, many out of foundation mares. I hope that group will go on to be strong silver and gold circuit lb contenders. He also produced 8 ** gold daughters and 20 *gold daughters this past season which I have added to my mare band.

Now that I have access to more straws I can stand Max to the public. Straws are pull price for anyone who is interested in some.

LB GMT wins

-I picked up another futurity foal gmt from a straw I was gifted back in June.
-3R14 Maximum Flag was era 14 champion stud.
- Mares sired by Max took 1st through 5th place for top era 14 mares.
- Foals sired by Max took 1st through 5th place for top PT.

It seems like there is no one else breeding boosted stock in this era right now so I am picking up all the gmt wins by default.

December Plans
This will be the last season I use Max via AI. His clone will come of age next year, and from that point on I will just Max him to sire pasture foals. (Man I would love a another pasture!)

I will be aggressively creating for candy ponies and rank specials this month. With two mares to boost, a pending lack of space, and hopefully another month of premium in Jan I am going to be very tight on cash. I need to make at least 200 foals to keep my numbers moving up so hopefully I can hit that.

Realistically I should probably skip the premium in Jan and pick up another 1k stall barn.

I also can FINALLY use those eggs I accidently purchased months ago.

ETA: December is also the start of a new era. I am going to be documenting building a leaderboard competitive line from scratch on the cheap.

Captain’s Log Supplimental: Starting your very first era project

I am starting a new project this December with the new era so I figured it would be good to get a “how to start guide” out now while there is still time for others to join in. This guide is not aimed at being the very best in the era, it is instead aimed at smaller barns who just wish to be competitive.

Goals: My goal for this line is to produce era 18 horses that will be competitive on the high payout “Primary Era Club” in a real life year, and to have horses I can boost into lower eras once this line hits breeding cap. I plan to eventually clone a lot with this line. Additionally this time I want the line to be 100% my Redriver breed. That is a vanity metric only and has no impact in the game. Sometimes I do the opposite and only use outside stock.

Notably I will not be trying to win GMTs on the era 18 club. I will definitely win some over the next year but staying at the top of the new era board takes a lot of focused expense. It can be done with a barn my size, but it is much smarter for me to do this cheaply and focus on building up my show herd. I will hit the breeding cap a season or two behind the front runners which is completely fine by me.

Selecting the horses:To compete in the new era you obviously need horses of that era. That means no exceptional herd helpers. Pick whatever color or colors appeals to you. I have decided to go with bay and brown blanket appaloosas.

Because I plan on doing a fair amount of cloning with this line once it is at cap, I need to keep genes that cost more than 1 GMT to at most heterozygous or out of the line all together. I have decided to exclude all higher cost genes except DP and will keep DP limited. If you aren't aiming for heavy cloning you don’t need to worry about this. I am just planing for the future.

Ideally you want to start your project with perfect breeding horses. If you have lower quality stock to start it will be much harder to stay competitive. All foundations created with Rank Special herd helpers will be perfect creates, as will any of the herd helpers with Perfect in the name. You can also get horses from the foundation rescue (click “Show available rescue horses.” on the search page). All foundation rescue horses are also perfect quality.

Because I want genetics not really found with rank specials, want a lot of horses, and want only my breed I am doing the following process to obtain my horses: 1) Bulk create lots of foundations 2) Auction them back to the game 3) Hand pick the foundations I like, from my breed, out of the rescue. Not only will every foundation I do this with be guaranteed to be perfect quality, they have the added benefit of all testing being done which saves me a ton of hbs.

Number of horses: You only need two horses for a new era project, a mare and a stud. Many top new era LB projects are done this way, with lots of maxing and cloning. I don’t want to spend the funds to do it that way so will instead be starting with between 10 and 20 foundations. (Depends how many I create that I like). I am doing an even number of mares and studs to start, but you can use just one stud if you would like. I want to start this project with a wide amount of genetic diversity but that is solely an optional thing. There is no benefit to starting with more horses or specific gender ratio.

Breeding: I will be using embryo transfer into 30 day surrogates for all my foals. You can of course live cover but I have a time limit to get this done in, so I need to make sure I get enough high quality foals each season. I personally find it cheaper to embryo transfer one or two foals for every keeper I get, instead of breeding and testing 20 of them.

Testing: I have a premium upgrade now so to start every foal is being run through strict breeding advice. SBA is a good first step to weed out the worst of the foals but it’s not good enough to stay competitive in the era system.

The next step is comparison testing. I never bother comparison testing a horse against its parents. In these early generations it’s a waste of money. I only care about how they compare to their siblings, as I need to keep only the top level possible. I will not be maxing or using perfect benchmarks for this project due to cost so my line won’t be perfect and that’s ok. It will still be competitive in the long term. I also won’t be using PT to decide on keeper foals or not. That’s showing ability and I am filtering by breeding ability here.

Long Term Strategy The FAQ section “What's Possible Per Generation?” has a great list of target paper levels and PTs. I MUST be hitting the listed paper levels to stay competitive, and having a larger number of horses at the start will add extra backs ups. I might test against PT at some points but you have to spend gmts on making foals perfectly consistent to worry about that too much. This is where people maxing can get away with less foals but I need to breed extra to hedge my bets.

December Notes:

I made bank this season. Thanks to the candy pony event and all the herd helpers I sold 80 special creates for a total of 13,367,500 hbs in income. I invested all of that back into productive things for my account. With the money I purchased: another month of premium upgrade for 2,142,000 hbs
a 500 stall barn for more show horses for 3,437,500 hbs
two 5% boosts for the *** gold mares I cloned last month for 5,000,000 hbs
and a 50 acre pasture for 3,900,000 hbs.

The difference was made up from lottery wins, my daily income and some hbs I was sent in RAoG (thanks whywishesarehorses Duven and AMochiBun)

Show Team Progress
I am down to only about 300 of my aged auction purchase horses left. My oldest homebreds just turned 8 and have just aged into 8W. 8W is where the real income starts to happen so I am fingers crossed for them to start earning faster than my old auction purchases are dying this season. I want to see those daily income numbers going up.

Breeding
Maximum Flag had his final breeding season as my primary stud this year, with a full 300 foals bred by me. Max will be retiring to be a pasture foal producer for me in the future. He took era 14 futurity champion which was a huge surprise to me and a really fun way to cap off his time has my head stud.

Era18 Project
I ended up with 6 colts and 6 fillies this season. To prevent needing to mess with culling to much I did 100% embryo transfer babies to ensure high quality. My gmt stash went towards getting the genes I wanted on all these foals. These won't all be perfect quality foals so next season I will need to look into a maxed tester to compare them too but for this generation I am happy with my results.

January Plans

My big goal is to hit 3000 horses this month. That should not be too difficult as I have over 400 breedable mares and well over 600 stalls I can put showers in. Let's see how many I can get made. More show horses = more money after all.

My new stud 3R13 Mutual Assurance will go into full baby production as my first double boosted over cap stallion. As stated in my original post goals he is available to everyone. Straws are 1k each

I have 3 double over cap mares who I will be doing single egg pulls all month long then finishing the season with a mass flush to get as many babies as possible from them. I also have 82 **gold era 13 or higher mares I can mass flush for embryos.

So while last season was all about investing for my barns future, this month is that future and it is time to make a great multitude of babies!
