I had the strangest, most surreal night last night. I’m exhausted still.
I stepped out at 11:30pm to let my elderly dog out and this young guy calls to me from the sidewalk, super apologetic, and asks me if some girl lives here. Nope, just me and my family, no mail ever comes with that name. Long story short this kid got catfished, and they used my address. He starts having a full breakdown in my driveway- he’s from El Salvador and here on a visit. In a strange country, alone and got lied to and got money stolen. Complete coincidence it was my house, I just happened to have woken up.
He was just apologizing and trying to hold it together, eventually telling me about his family and pets and life. He said he wasn’t safe enough to drive back, so we tried calling his buddy but he was asleep. I’m blind, so I couldn’t like, drop the kid off. So instead we chatted for a couple of hours until he was mentally in a better place where he could get back, luckily he’s staying a couple streets away so he didn’t have to go very far. He was here until past 1:30am.
But jeez. Of all places, my house in the middle of the night. I feel awful for this kid but I’m glad it was me and not someone else who might’ve done something to him or called the police on him etc. Seemed like a sweetheart, just young and naive still, out of his home country by himself for the first time. I remember what it was like to be alone in a strange country at that age, looking for help. I hope today he is doing better.
For now, I’m gonna keep holed up in my room and fight off the arthritis aches from the rapid weather change
