Dreading a major herd reduction
  • I was laid off for a bit and just went back to work beginning of this month. I still haven't got all my horses bred yet and starting next moth, I'll be even busier so I decided I need to do a major herd reduction on my breeders. I'm thinking I'll cut it down by at least 1/3. I'm dreading going through to pick who to keep. 2nd to 5th gen are already almost exclusively superior to dams, so I don't even know where to begin. :-)) wish me luck! I have until Sunday to try to do this!

  • You can do it! :)
I've been unable to properly breed my non-repeat project homebreds for a couple of seasons right now because of time, so I set some different goals besides worrying about breeding everyone and having room for them. Just pulling eggs on my favs.
First I've been show cycling mares so I can see stand outs in points that are obviously better shows than breeders so even if I love their genes, they get the snip to find their potential in the show barn.
Second all Gen 3 and 4s got sorted into 5 lines. Then I made sure all potential breeding mares age 2 and up fit in my existing pastures after the cull. No breeder mares sitting in the barns and studs got a heavy hand in Gen 3 and 4.
Running out of time to hand breed Gen 4's I picked 6 sires involved with rare studs like Dark Star's boys to go through those pastures at once. Normally I'd only give each stud 5-10 mares.
As pasture horses age out I'll be using the space to store my Foundation through Gen 3 mares for egg pulling. :)
