Breeding for Buckskins
  • Hey guys. i'm looking for help. I have a pasture I'm trying to breed just for buckskin but i don't think my genetic thinking is right. Could you help out and tell which genes could make buckskins?

  • Buckskins need an E an A and a Cr gene. The A can be plain A, A+ or At.
    Dabbler in EVERYTHING.
  • Throughout this discussion, A* can refer to A, A+, or At.

At the end of the day, Buckskin is Cream + Bay, which is genetically E_A*_Crcr. So the trick is to maximize the E and A* while controlling how many parents can contribute cream.

The best way to guarantee buckskins is to cross a perlino that is homozygous for dominant agouti and dominant extension (EEA*A*CrCr) with a bay that is homozygous for dominant agouti and dominant extension (EEA*A*). Having horses that are Ee or A*a will result in chances of smoky black (which doesn't show cream) or palomino babies. Having stallions and mare that are heterozygous for Cream (Crcr) can result in double dilute (perlino, cremello, and smoky cream) offspring or non-dilute (bay, palomino, black) offspring.

The best option will depend on what you do or don't like. If you hate the look of double dilutes, keeping cream on only your stallion (that is, having a double dilute stallion) and keeping cream off your mares will prevent double dilutes from happening. If you don't mind variety, having heterozygous cream and a mix of E and A options on both sides will give the most possible offspring combinations.

If you only want buckskins and have the patience to collect very specific mares, a EEA*A* perlino stallion and EEA*A* mares will give the highest percentage of buckskin offspring. (That will make it more challenging to get buckskin in your third generation, since you won't have any homozygous cream stallions to guarantee the inheritance of cream, but it's really up to you how you want to go at it.

As a note, a horse that is EeA*A*Crcr, EEA*aCrcr, or EeA*aCrcr will still be bucksin, but are not gauranteed to produce bucksin offpsring.
