Bootstrapping -- To Geld or Not To Geld
  • So I'm sorting through horses to figure out if there's any of my stud colts I can geld or auction just off the bat, and I realized I had a few recent ones I'm unsure about. Keep in mind I haven't PT tested or papered half of these guys yet, but as a general rule, would y'all say that bootstrap colts out of a semi-bootstrapped stud and a foundation mare are better than out of two bootstrapped horses? Should I wait to paper/PT test or are there some I should go ahead and geld right off the bat?

  • Out of the colts you have here... If I was looking for my bootstrap herd's next lead sire I would use Valiant. He is the highest papered out of all them and from a quality standpoint would be best to build around. You can breed him to reds and blues once he's old enough.

They are all beautiful colts, however many of them seem to be more of even bred pairings rather than bootstrapping. There isn't anything wrong with this but if your goal is bootstrapping then reevaluation may be needed. I wouldn't necessarily auction any of these boys unless you are really in need of the stall space and the point of bootstrapping is to build your show herd quickly.

If you need more information about bootstrapping I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • I would paper them and see if any are high papers.
All into high quality black based primitive duns and bootstraps.

  • @RunFarAway: Ah okay. In that case, I think I'll definitely use Valiant for a bootstrapping sire once he's old enough if I don't have another by then. I'll probably keep Spirit, Water, and Amplify ungelded to build up one of my non-bootstrapped lines that has similar genes, but then geld Colors and Exceptions. And that's a good point about not auctioning, too! I'm still fairly new to the whole bootstrapping thing haha.

In general, for bootstrapping, would it be better to breed to foundation mares with a Star* stallion or to breed to Gold* mares?

  • Bootstrapping is easiest to do with a *Star stallion and whatever mares you may have lying around (foundation or non benchmark meeting lined mares). Most of the experienced bootstrappers are happy to pass along good colts to someone just starting out for a nice price, we all are also swimming in colts each season. I saw you have another thread to look for a colt in the meantime, so you are on the right track there.

A good sized herd of quality *Gold mares is going to be more expensive to build up to use a lower quality stallion. I have used this method to boost the quality of other lines after I was getting a large surplus of golds from bootstrapping.

With bootstrapping, you will want to do genetics, PT, and paper testing. Do not use Breeding Advice on these horses since they will not pass. After that it's a good idea to turn off testing so that you don't accidentally put them through BA later. Keep all the mares you get to breed back to their sire once they're of age. Colts you can sort through and geld based on paper and/or genetics. My herd is pretty homogeneous at this point as I culled or bred out any genes I don't like.
  • Ah okay, thanks! So if we have a non-bootstrapped line and a mare we would normally spay from it, we can just use her for bootstrapping?

I have 1-2 *Gold mares I think so I'll definitely focus on the stallion for right now haha.

Ah okay, thank you! Is there a way to tell how much of a high versus low *Star the colts are?

  • Yes! You can certainly take a mare you might normally spay and put her with your bootstrap herd. Just remember that stallion's can only breed 50 times a season, so at some point you may need more than one stallion to cover all the mares if you desire lots of show foals.

I see that you are getting a colt from Pixie. He is actually a decendant out of my bootstrap herd that started with a DarkStar bred colt. I started a thread about a month ago and discovered that my boys were very high stars. To the point where I likely can't get superior colts without boosting. So the boy you are getting is a very high star. As far as determining who to keep, once you get several "generations" in and colts start passing BA, you will want to begin comparison testing to pick out the best breeders. With the stallion you're getting don't be surprised if you never get a superior son.
  • Ah okay, and thanks for the reminder! I'll definitely make sure to check on that haha.

Oh that's awesome! I can't wait to see how they turn out in the first few generations.
