My Newest Art Project! Horse Related, Too!
  • So, I'm painting a model horse I have. She's been primed in Gesso. The mold is supposed to be a National Show Horse (Arabian/Saddlebred cross), I'm doing her a black and white pinto/paint/tobiano/whatever. I'm doing loads of firsts with her. This is my first time using Gesso. This is my first time using Painter's Tape, putting it where white markings will be. This is my first time using oil paints on a model horse. This is technically my first time really focusing on using oils. Y'all, wish me luck. I made her a stand, because she has issues standing well. I don't have pictures of it, though. It's a oval shaped piece of wood with bark, but I added sand to make it kinda look like a sandy arena. I'll post photos later, if I remember. That all being said... here's a few sneak peeks of her. The first two pictures are her face marking(s), obviously. The next ones are one of her leg markings, which kinda wraps around her upper leg and connects to a marking on the other side of her leg/shoulder. Wherever you see white, she'll be black (minus her hooves and eyes). Wherever you see dark blue, she'll be white (but the snip will be pinkish).
I'm thinking of naming her Diamond or Jewel when she's done, but we'll see what comes to mind when she's done.

(You'll have to click links to see her.)

****Links not working because my phone is dumb and hates me uploading anything. Pardon me while I smash my phone!

  • I'd love to see them, Spry, but none of the links seem to be working.

It sounds like an intriguing and challenging project. Good luck.

  • @SandyCreekFarm, ugh. I hate my phone. I'll try to upload them via TinyPic from my PC later. That way the pictures will be immediately seen on this post.

  • Both of my devices suck. My gf wants to buy me a new phone, so hopefully with that one I can add images. That being said... I painted her first coat right at 10 days ago, and she's still wet. I hate that about oil paints. And to think I still have to add st least one more coat of paint, let that dry, then finish the minor details (eyes, nose pinking, few white areas with pink skin almost, hooves/shoes, etc). Such fun. I wanna paint her now and be finished tomorrow. :)) I'm impatient.

  • I heartily sympathize. One reason I generally use watercolors or acrylics (when I'm not doing charcoal or pastels) for my art is because of the shorter drying time. I've only done a few paintings with oils, though, so I have experienced that long wait.

  • They say if it's thin layers, it should only take about 24 hours to be "touch dry". I call lies. Major lies. I wanna bake this mess. =))
