How Does Chinchilla Work?
-
I am trying to figure out what color horse would get the best effect from having Chinchilla added... Bay? Chestnut? Black?
I would love to see examples :)✿ Kismet | #38280 | Bootstrapping Excellence ✿ -
here is the link from when if first came out. You'll have to scroll past the wrong warp examples

Since Chinchilla wipes out red pigment, it will have no effect on black horses, and if put on chestnut horses, it will usually turn them white, though perhaps Sooty will retain some black on the top line.
It works very well on Bay and Brown horses, and I'd expect it would do well on Buckskins and Amber Champagnes. Here is my foundation stallion.

Best way to see what chinchilla can do is go to the horse search and choose all horses where Chinchilla is not the dominant gene. (that will get you all the homozygous chinchilla horses).
This mare is just precious, Kintara, for the win again!

As said above you need that E (black) gene to see any decent expression of Chinchilla. Chestnut and liver horses will always be pure white.

Bay and brown horses will only express as much contrast/shading as the agouti gene allows the horse to express black. So you are going to have way more white on a wild bay horse than a regular bay or brown horse and darkening genes like sooty will give you more contrast.

Silver black is my all time favourite expression of the Chinchilla gene. It seems to enhance the dappling effect that silver gives and can have quite a dramatic effect.
