How to tell if you have hom and het snowflake
-
So I've been lightly dipping my toes into the world of snowflake breeding, but I'm still struggling at telling if I have a hom or Het snowflake.
So please help me understand this hidden gene.
Painful Snow
And a filly that I bred that I don't believe has the snowflake gene? -
If it is able to be registered in the Snowflake breeders club, it is hom Snowflake.
If both parents are hom Snowflake, it is hom Snowflake.
If one parent is Snowflake, it is at least het Snowflake.
If it produces a Snowflake, it is at least het Snowflake.#28036 -
Your filly is at least het Snowflake because her sire is a Snowflake. See if she can be registered in the Snowflake breeders club. Its a 50-50 chance that she is Snowflake because her dam is a carrier.#28036

Definitely try entering her in the breeders club, as Haltanny said. With markings like hers, that's really the only way to know for sure. These are both snowflake, but it's impossible to tell!

Also remember that even if your horse is hom for snowflake, it has to carry Lp (Appaloosa) for it to show. For instance, this poor guy, who didn't manage to get Lp from either parent. *sigh*

But still managed to sire:

Tried to enter her and I couldn't, so would she be a carrier or she is just unlucky and never got the gene?
-
Her sire is snowflake which means he's homozygous for it. Any of his offspring will at least be het.--------------------------------

She is guaranteed to be a carrier/heterozygous because her sire is homozygous for it :)Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Okay I'm understanding now. Lol
So if I breed her back to her father, I should get a hom snowflake then?
If I breed two hets, would I get a hom snowflake foal from them? -
She's het (SNFsnf, and her sire is hom SNFSNF) The options for a foal from that pairng would be SNFSNF, SNFSNF, snfSNF, and snfSNF. So you'd only have a 50/50 chance of hom snowflake, and a 50% chance of het snowflake. Any foal is guaranteed to inherit one SNF from the sire, but could inherit her non-snowflake gene.
Two hets (SNFsnf and SNFsnf), you'd get SNFSNF, SNFsnf, snfSNF, and snfsnf. So that gives you 25% hom snowflake, 50% het snowflake, and 25% no snow flake at all. If it helps, using punnet squares can help you see your odds.~Purveyor of the finest riding horses in Rakia~

Her dam is het, so her parents have the ability to produce Snowflake. You don't have to breed her back to her sire just for a chance at Snowflake, you could get it by breeding her parents again.#28036
