Trying to determine DP
-

Sooty buckskin Colt 4
Do you think this boy has a copy of DP? I'm having a hard time telling on buckskins.
TIA -
Hmmmm...he’s tough.
He’s visually a bit darker than a lot of dark buckskins.
But he’s also noticeably lighter than my known het DP buckskins from my GP line.

I dont think he has any copy of DP, but im not that great at telling. He just might be a sooty buckskin
-
@Cheers your Hom boy is gorgeous. And I was on the fence as well. Thank you for your comparisons. :) He is a hard one to read.
@MariaChapinFarm3 he definitely could be. He's a hard one to tell. Thank you. :) -
Maybe try rerolling the image a couple times to see if you can get him to show up darker or lighter? Might give you a better idea.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask!

For comparison's sake, I verified this guy is hom DP in the GMT lab.

You could test breed him to hom sooty chestnuts, if he produces a liver foal, he must carry DP. Then you could yum the foals, if you plan to GMT him. Or test with black liver mares, if he produces a black liver, he has DP. He is pretty hard to tell for sure, i'm kind of leaning towards him having it though.#28036

@Haltanny thank you! I was thinking this is well. I really would love to put S+ on him.
-
@Cheval - I can send you a Freaky Friday RH egg if you want to try that as a test... you'd be guaranteed at least a het DP foal in that instance anyway tho, I think Haltanny's idea will probably get you there faster tho
-
@Stella19 that's very sweet of you! I think I may test him to a few hom sooty chestnuts just to see what happens and yummy the foals back. (I have a few brood mares I can use). Do you think four would be enough?
What's your opinion (From everyone)? Would he be worth putting S+ on? I'd really love having an S+ line, but should I just add it later in the line? -
I'd try to aim for at least 5, but honestly, 10 would be even better. I probably have some spare sooty chestnut mares you could use, if you don't have that many.
I think he would look awesome with sooty+, and if he passed BA/SBA, you know he has to be at least a good producer. Put him to mares with a decent pasture bonus and you should get some really nifty foals. I say go for it, if you have the HBs/IVs to get the GMTs needed.#28036 -
He passed SBA. I SBA all my HH. I do have a pasture of fuel mares I could put him with to see what he could do.
I would have to buy the GMT tokens or hold a sale of eggs and straws to raise funds for them. Maybe sell a few horses that I wouldn't normally sell from my ice lines. -
You would have two full months to GMT him, if you waited u til he was 4 to start using him. So, up to you if you think you can raise the funds. Since he passed SBA, you know he's good.#28036

Very true. :) I'll start saving up the IVs and see what I can come up with.
