Gen Questions/Even Breeding
  • Ok, so I have been looking through my own breeding stock. I have weeded down some, and am working on others. In an effort to better evenly breed, I have been marking/moving horses accordingly, but I have run into a bit of a bump with a few. I have some that are definitely uneven, but I gave up trying to track and count after gens 7+. At what point is it just not worth keeping track of anything other than whether or not they are even bred?

  • Check out this link and marvel, as I did, at the similar terms used to ask the question! :D

  • I generally try but it's just not worth the effort in my opinion once you get to the point of having to expand the pedigree. At that point it's so hard to tell ability based on generation/papers that AFPT might be easiest anyway.
  • If I have a horse with over 4 gen., I make a note that the horse is over 4thG. It is just easier for me to keep track. I just look at G4 horse pedigree and breed to horses that are 4G or over, I breed 2G to 2G, G1 to G1 and so forth. I know one person just makes a note of G when she has horses with more than 4G.

  • Now it makes so much more sense! Thank you @ConfluenceFarms for that link.
@ElementalStables it gets so convoluted after awhile, I was having trouble making any sense of all the gens for some of these guys

  • Ok call me stupid. I read the link above. I just started in Nov so I had to buy most of my mares. So most of the foals I have kept are uneven. But I have used two A studs and all the foals are either A or red and blue with PT scores at 10 and above. I just got an red filly out of a random create. So does this mean I am doing something right? I have noted the uneven foals.

  • I think when breeding for intact foals matching paper levels is most important over generation.

  • Generation matching has zero influence on intactness, only paper level/breeding ability maters.

  • The only reason I generally care about generation evenness is OCD preference for the symmetry in the pedigree (aka nothing to do with quality lol), and that it makes it easier for me to know if they're SUPPOSED to be about even quality. There are levels within each paper range, so breeding Gen 2 Reds vs Gen 3 Reds could make a big difference in quality (though AFPT is the only real way to know if those Gen 3s are any better than the Gen 2s - generation means nothing on its own).
  • Spot on.
