GMTing my FF, now he looks like het DP?
-
I did some GMT work on my Freaky Friday stud, now he looks like a regular het DP liver to me. I think it happened when I changed the F to f. That couldn't actually happen though, could it? Is it just the way he looks now? Here he is, and my other FF mare to contrast.

Were you hoping to see the pearl? because it won't show up unless it's Hom. And yes, his mane and tail are lighter because of the F to f, but otherwise he looks right to me! I think the lighter mane and tail sort of draw out some of the black and make it look more liver.

Ok, as long as you think he looks fine. I only did het pearl because I don't really want him to show it but I want his offspring to have a chance at it. I wanted hom flaxen for the lighter mane & tail, but it made his body slightly lighter too. :)ID: 16853

I definitely agree that your stud look hom DP but this isn't the first time I've been suspicious that there is some, albeit minimal, effects of het pearl. I know we don't see the whole pearl effect unless it's paired with another dilution gene, but I've had a couple horses over the breeding years that looked phenotypically different with just one copy of the pearl gene.
I agree your stud look like he has a very subtle difference in his highlights - their not as crisp as with the mare. I'd be curious if those stayed with rerolling his portrait.
Of my horses, this mare is my best case in point. She is pretty much a straight black, phenotypically, with one copy of pearl. And, yet, she looks like a black horse that has had a body clip. I've rerolled her portrait and it remains the same.

Compared to another all black (with tobiano - which the previous has but doesn't show as much)

That's interesting @Waldgraf. There is definitely a marked difference in that first mare. She looks almost grullo. I've rerolled my stallion's picture several times, and the only thing that changed was his dapples.ID: 16853
