Straws
-
I feel like this might be a dumb question but I'm going to ask anyways. What's the point of straws?
-
Well there's a few benefits I see.
Control of whose getting breedings to a nice stallion/closed genes.
Grab straws to a stallion you love but don't have a suitable mare for yet.
Have a stockpile of straws for the future if a stallion dies or you sell it.
Get more than just the 50 breedings a season you can normally get from a stallion.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

In addition to what HunterUnderSaddleGirl listed - a lot of people dont stand their stallions public. And sometimes you cant with certain restricted genes.
You can also only use straws with eggs to create embryos.
I know she mentioned this but saving straws for a future date if you dont have a mare or all of your mares are bred for the season etc & saving straws for when stallions pass out of the game. <-- lots of us do this. I have lots of straws saved from boys who arent around anymore.<br />
There are lots of reasons. We're a community not many of us just stick to breeding within our own barns. We use straws from other peoples stallions and sell straws from our stallions so we can have more variety in our herds.

Thanks. Now I wish I hadn't had my best stallion at public stud this season. Oh well haha

Even if the stallion was up for public stud and got his maximum of 50 "live cover" breedings, you can still pull straws from him.
