If a horse is entered in the auction, it can no longer be purchased from the sales board. It will still have a sale price listed but if you click on its page there is no option to purchase it.

Oh okay I guess that's for if people put them up for auction they can't pull them out while other people bid

Once bidding starts you can't pull a horse out of the auction but you have up until 6 am game time the morning the auction runs to remove a horse from auction if you want.
