I went through all of my studs and altered about 25!

Anybody else have horses that you weren't sure of gelding? How did you decide?

At least half of my 3rd gen boys are "maybe I should held him...nah!" B-)

It hurts hard to snip your boys, especially when they are borderline or you don't already have a stallion for that line. Just remember, keeping inferior colts will only mean you're breeding inferior broodmares for your future generations, so when you get a better colt to come along, your mares may not be up to snuff!

The comparison test is my best friend. I have a serious love hate relationship with it. But it took me a good 9 months of playing to get serious about breeding only for the top quality I could get. I just slowly stepped that way over the months (well, after the first 3 or 4 months when I basically ran around after all the shiny ponies like a border collie on crack).

I'm super proud of you Hunter! If I was on the fence about a colt, I tried to be governed by quality and really hard nosed about snipping. Once everything had been snipped for quality, I often found that nothing I had left was really the colors I was looking for in the line they'd come from, but a lot of times I could fit them into another line which meant I could mix things up a bit. I also was/am not adverse to using a couple of GMTs to tweak a colt, especially if he only missed one or two things I was looking for. It makes for pretty expensive stallions but I always try to take advantage of Ammits sales on GMTs, which helps!

Colour--when I had as many intact colts as you do I would make a chart, listing names and the special genes my colts had that I wanted in my lines (Pearl, DP, Satin, patterns, etc). From that I could sort them into groups for each line and pick the top one or two from that group and snip the rest.

Yea I had a hard time with some of mine still. Buying horses for my tall RH goal I ended up with an A 2G, but he only has splash. I wasn't in a position to GMT him at the time. And that messes up the few 3G studs I have too that are still B papered.

All my uneven horses to make show ponies have to be A (or star) and absolutely gorgeous!
