    I feel like there are a lot of these topics, but the whole hidden gene thing is a bit confusing, I'm not 100% sure what to look for just yet. I bred this colt this season and he is extremely dark for a buckskin. His dam is StySty and so is he, but he is still much darker, so does that mean he could heterozygous for DP or is just a really dark sooty?

    Definitely heterozygous DP, I would actually be inclined to say he's homozygous DP?

    He is definitely het DP. Like Aztec said he may be hom DP, the only thing that keeps be from saying he is for sure is that I don't think Yule log horses can come with two copies of DP?

    You can compare the two horses above. First is brown second is normal bay.

    I'm pretty sure Ammit meant to say that you can't compare the two.

    The brown (At) gene paired with Ssty Ssty will make horses very dark regardless of whether or not they carry dp. Although in his case I'd say it's a good chance he is het DP but you won't know for sure until you breed him.

    This is a mare of mine that I'm 90% certain is hom DP. Her sire is hom DP and her dam is het DP.

    Okay so he's got at least one copy of DP? Is there anyway to see if he is homozygous for it? I am not familiar with what hidden genes each of the RS have so I'm no help there lol I was comparing him to the below filly, who is just sooty I believe. Its a bit confusing trying to pick which is which lol

    I'm not quite sure what you mean Ammit. Both of those horses are buckskin, but does the bay gene affect the type of buckskin? Forgive my ignorance if its obvious lol


    EDIT; Didn't see the newest post before I made this one lol That makes much more sense :) Thank you! I'll make sure I keep and eye out when I breed him, I'm curious to see what he produces
