If you had a foundation stud that passed all the free tests and had a decent show record and you bred him to a bunch of foundation mares and half of the foals were gelded or spayed. Would you geld him and keep him as a show horse or would you give him another season?

Half or over half of the foals being altered seems pretty high to me.

Unless you have the $ to buy more stallions, I would check out the mares. Just because they pass free testing doesn't mean any of them are all that good. IF you don't have an upgrade to check their PT scores it will take you several seasons worth of breeding to see if they are any good.

I agree with Confluence. If you have the money to replace him or have other good foundies studs then geld him.
You also need to double check the mares. I've had a lot of mares that pass MA that are not good producers

More importantly, half gelded or spayed isn't all that high! He and the mares could be perfectly fine with nothing wrong with them. That's pretty normal numbers.

Okay thanks. I was just trying to judge him against the other studs. I have one that has only a few altered foals and the rest were intact this stallion has AFPT of a 10. I just started keeping track at the end of last month and all this month of what mares were bred to what stallion and if the foals were intact or not and also the stallions ratio's. I have 3 foundation studs. One produces the most intact, one produces the most fillies, and then this guy produces the most altered. :( I have a free account and dont have AFPT's on the other two studs. How many foals would I need to keep from the other two to get the stallions AFPT s to show up?

I have one mare that was bred to the same stallion last month and this month. Last month the foal was fine this month it was altered. I have others that were bred to the same stallion twice and had both good foals. Other mares were bred to different stallions and both were altered. :( I'm working on clearing out the mares that I dont think are that great at producing or showing.

I know that Cheers used to cull any mare that had 3 altered foals. I don't mind altered foals if the PT is high enough to make it a nice show horse. Without the PT test you may want to go with Cheers' method.

Remember; just like in real life, this is all a roll of the dice, a flip of a coin. Your horses could just be having a run of low(er) breeding ability babies right now. Without the testing an upgrade allows you have to use trial and error to figure out how good a horse is IN GENERAL. You will never be able to calculate their breeding ability. Only Ammit can do that. Most people judge stallions by looking at 10+ foals, and mares by looking at 3+ foals. Even then it's a crap shoot! That's what makes this game interesting. You use YOUR judgement/instinct to decide which horses to keep, and which to ditch! It's never going to be a sure thing!

Don't forget to factor the pasture bonus in. 30 days = 100% bonus Were the mares at least at half pasture bonus?

Pasture bonus makes a HUGE difference in how many intact versus not you will get.
