When you click on the Gene Mod Lab, you will see at the top of the page:
"You may modify the genetics of any horse you own, that is 4 years of age and younger, unbred, and gene tested. Some rare genes can not be modified. Each modification costs 1 GMT token per allele. You have [whatever the number is] GMT tokens. You can purchase more on the upgrade page."

The number of GMT's needed per allele (1) is the minimum amount, and is what is required to give a lined horse something it missed from one of its parents. The complete listing of how many GMT's each allele costs when placed on a foundation is listed in the rest of the page. Costs range from 1 to 40 (Satin), depending on the rarity of the gene.
