damages?!
-
It means your horse has done something to get in trouble. An example could be cribbing, breaking something, or biting another horse. It could be anything that a horse does out of boredom and frustration. I have had a few horses get into trouble; usually I put them in the pasture after that which stops it. Ammit said it tells you something about the horse. Some people will sell the troublesome horse back to the game in order to quickly fix the problem.

Back in the old days high damages meant that the horse was not very good in the show ring. Now that the damages are so small I don't know if it means the same thing.

Ah, yes. Since she's leveled off at 4 years old, she is definitely NOT a show horse. However, she could very well be a decent brood mare, since breeding and showing ability are two separate qualities and there is no cross-over between them, especially for foundation horses.
I think, though, when Hunt and Jump was a very young game, and all the testing helps hadn't been created yet, damages was a way to tell if a horse was a bad breeder, and were often very, very high. Now it has less importance in evaluating horses, but if you find that a horse is costing you more in damages than it adds to your showing bonus, you might want to get rid of it.De gustibus non disputandum.
