Hello fellow haj enthusiasts!

I’ve decided to start a series of educational posts aimed mostly at newer players. Though older players may learn something too!
I am a player who started only a short time ago, and build up my stables relatively quickly. I asked a lot of questions and figured the system out enough that now I am the proud owner and breeder of many multi award winning horses. Being a new player and not knowing what to ask and where to ask it is hard. I want to see yall succeed too! One of the best things about this game is seeing how others build up their breeding programs and watching new stables come into awards every season. :x I want to share my knowledge with my fellow players, in hopes it can help you out a little.

So without further ado-

PT and Papers: A Short Guide

I see a lot- and I mean a lot of misconception around PT and papers. I see a lot of folks reach for horses that are lower quality to breed because of their PT, or skip over ones with better papers because they assume PT is important.

We are going to throw that right out the window! Toss those ideas right out of your brain.

PT means essentially nothing when it comes to breeding quality. Say it with me: PT means nothing when it comes to breeding quality You will see a lot of posts of people looking for horses over a certain PT level for breeding, and it actually doesn’t impact breeding programs at all- in fact, thinking like this can absolutely hinder your stables! Focusing on your breeding horses’ PT is the wrong thing to do if you want to bring your horses up in quality.

For some examples, I’ll use my own horses:

VGN Nav, the first stallion, is 13.60 PT. The second stallion, VGN Lesbian Avenger, is 15.2 PT.

VGN Nav

VGN Lesbian Avenger

This is a pretty noticeable difference in PT. However, they are both double boosted over the breeding cap, and at the same paper level. As far as breeding goes, these two are both top quality. Nav’s lower PT and Avenger’s higher PT do not matter. When using max ability on their offspring and making them perfectly consistent (when bred to double boosted mares) will always result in breeding cap quality, 15PT foals. Breeding wise, they function the same!

Another example to blow your minds a bit more:

Here are two of my horses that are 5% boosted over the cap. This is also known as single boosted.

VGN Dandelion I

VGN Fire Eater

Fire Eater, at 15 PT, at first glance looks like a better option than Dandelion, who is 10.50 PT. However both of these horses are the same quality and have the potential to produce the same quality foals. Dandelion is a bit of an anomaly because he was a moving sale special, he is a foundation horse hence the 10.50 PT. But he does make for a dramatic example of how PT doesn’t really mean much at all with breeding quality. Both of these horses function the exact same when it comes to breeding.

If PT doesn’t mean anything, then how can you tell what horses to use?

When looking for breeding stock, or choosing horses from your existing stock, comparison testing is indispensable.

If you are working with horses of lower paper levels than **star/**gold, comparison test them against each other to find which are superior in breeding quality, so you can use those to improve your program. You should also test them against their dam or sire. Try to aim for the horses to test superior to the dam/sire. Ones that test as good as their dam/sire can be useful as well. Don't use ones that test worse than their sire/dam if you are focusing on bringing up quality! This will drag your progress down and undo the work you’ve done.

If you are looking at the ones that are **star/**gold, You can then comparison test them against each other to find which has the best breeding quality as well. Another great tool to have is getting a horse that you know for sure is breeding cap quality, then comparison testing your horses to it to find out which are at the breeding cap. Breeding cap horses will test ‘as good as’ the cap horses you bought to test against. In my opinion, owning cap quality horses you can use as a benchmark is essential when developing a breeding program. It takes away the confusion and guesswork, and you’ll know for certain where your horses stand.

Luckily, on Forest, you will find many players who breed top quality horses and are willing to sell or give one to you to use for comparison testing! We have a fantastic community here, and many folks are willing to help out. This makes it less difficult to find out where your breeding program stands and what needs improvement. Haj’s community is fantastic.

I hope this little ramble helped! Happy Hajing, friends.

-VenemousGiant

Hello fellow hajers,

If you’re in a similar spot as me lately, things feel bleak. I blame the heatwave, something astrology related, or just plain ol depression. So to heck with that! Lets show off our favorite in game horses that we own right now.
If you know me you know I have found a love for working on lines from scratch. I have some ponies so proud of right now, here they are

First is my beloved boy:

VGN Nav
VGN Nav is the perfect boy and everything I wanted. He is double boosted over the cap and Gen 3 even bred. The founding stallion for this line was one of my very first gmt projects. I think I stare at him several times a day :))

Next,

VGN Dandelion I
VGN Dandelion is my liver chestnut boy and brand new. He is one of 8 super foundations on Forest server, meaning he is 5% boosted over the breeding cap even though he’s a foundation horse, made possible by the moving sale. Dandelion is my nickname from my fiancée as it’s my favorite flower. His matching mare will be Daisy- which of course, is my fiancée’s nickname.

And then

VGN Yellowjacket
Yellowjacket is my boosted foundation stallion for my Voskeguyn line. Voskeguyn means “golden” in my culture. I love how this guy came out and I think his color really embodies the theme, I can’t wait to see how well he does

Finally:

VGN Allons y RS RoF

VGN TARDIS RS RoF
Allons y and TARDIS from my Whovian line. I have not done much work since completing them but I think they will make an amazing line. I hope to start focusing on them next season, now that Dandelion and Daisy are almost finished. Thank you to those who sent me new coke ponies from RAoG this season to add to this line!

I have so many more horses I am proud of, but are the ones I’ve put the most work into I think, and I built all of these ones from scratch. I have a lot of lined horses I adore that deserve to be here too but if I listed them all, we’d be here until 2030.

Show me your horses- projects, lined, creates, etc. Show me your favorites! Tell me why you love them so much! I’m nosey, I want to know which ponies bring you joy

Okay I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with my medium bone ponies. I have such lovely ones but they just didn’t capture my heart the way the draft/cob art does. I knew I needed a medium bone BC to remedy this at some point, and I ended up going for the Dutch warmblood because it’s gorgeous and fits my favorite tack on it. I went back and forth about it because I really want long manes and this one is braided, but decided to do it. Let me tell you, I am obsessed now with my medium bone kids! They are so lovely now. I’m not sure if it’s a happy accident that the Dutch warmblood fits a lot of the bridles and halters, but I am so grateful for it because they are just so cute! (Now if only the western reins weren’t floating.. haha- invisible rider :)) ) I have an obsession as a lifelong ranch hand with the trail tack so the fact it fits makes me so happy

It was especially important to me because my upcoming lines are cob and riding pony, and I intend to cross them.
Hey! I just made a tattoo to indicate my breeding herds and found it easier than I expected, so I wanted to share what I did to maybe help out some other people :) Just to clarify, this is just one way of making a tattoo - there might be easier ways to do this. This was just the moist intuitive and accessible to me as a Windows user. I think it's best for simple designs - think a solid symbol and/or some letters - not hand sketched creations. I did my best to explain, but feel free to ask questions or tell us about easier ways!

I'm also willing to take simple tattoo requests. :) Here's how mine came out, as modeled by my SEB Argent:

THE PROCESS
Software Recommended: Greenshot (free)

Software Required: Microsoft Paint 3D (free), Microsoft PowerPoint (paid)/Microsoft Office Online equivalent (free),

1) Figure out what you want to do!
Let your creativity flow here. Think about what you're trying to show. I just wanted a "signature" mark for my breeding line that represented my stable name (Cheval Chartreux, as I'm focused on blue roans). Sketching ideas with pencil and paper helped me visualize my ideas without getting too invested. Keeping your design simple here will save you time later - think a simple symbol, or letters. I decided on a fleur de lis framed by 2 "C"s (the acronym for Cheval Chartreux).

2) Use your favorite program to sketch the design digitally. Simplify your idea if needed.
Now, pick your favorite design and create it digitally. If you're sticking to symbols and letters, PowerPoint is super easy - just use clip art and text boxes to position everything as you like. Size doesn't matter much yet, but if you start with smaller images and font size the next step will be easier. Try make everything one single color. I placed a very simple fleur de lis, then added 2 text boxes (one reversed) and played with different fonts and spacing until I was happy. I made it dark navy - again, the whole blue thing :) If you're having trouble, edit your design! Remember it will be tiny in the end, so mercilessly cut any tiny, small, or even some medium details. To get an idea of how small we're talking, open HAJ/HJ2 in your browser and zoom out in PowerPoint until it is as small as the star quarter mark tack item.

NOTE: If you want to freehand your design, go for it! This step just gives you a reference image - I'm terrible at pixel art, so I need all the help I can get lol.

3) Make a screenshot of your design and paste it into Paint 3D.
I use a free program called Greenshot for screenshots because you can customize how much of the page you capture at once. (If you're using the full screen screenshot, you'll need to crop it later.) If you don't have it already, download Microsoft Paint 3D for free (you MUST have 3D - regular Paint doesn't have a way to make the background transparent). Paste your screenshot and crop it using the 1:1 ratio option.

4) Resize the image and set up your canvas.
Go to the Canvas tab. In the menu on the right, turn on "Transparent canvas" (your image will still have a white background because it came in with the screenshot - we'll fix it in a minute). Make sure "Lock aspect ratio" and "Resize image with canvas" are both checked, then enter 25 pixels for both the height and width of the canvas.

5) Make the background transparent.
Zoom waaaaaay in to take a look at your masterpiece. You'll notice a lot of fuzziness, and that your background is still white. We'll start with the latter issue. Go back to the "Brushes" tab, select the Eraser, and dial your thickness down to 1 pixel (remember - this baby's only 25 pixels wide). Erase the white background areas as best you can - you'll see the program background color show through as you go. I left some of the fuzzy parts in at this point. You will come back and clean up more later, so don't go too crazy.

6) Clean up your image.
Okay, this is the trickiest part, but it won't take as long as you think. Use the eyedropper tool (next to the color selection box) to pick the color that's closest to what you want from your image. It's easiest to go with one color, but you can recolor things later if you want to mix it up. Use the Pixel Pen tool (again at 1 pixel thickness) to define your shape. Start with the pixels that are already darker than those around them, then slowly fill in other pixels to get closer to the right shape. For me, it took a lot of trial and error and zooming in and out to make the fleur de lis look mostly right. Be patient, try different things, and zoom in and out until you're happy. When it looks right, use the eraser tool to remove any extra pixels from your design. You should have only pixels of one color (your design) and blank pixels at the end of this process.

7) Save that puppy!
Save the design as a PNG file.

8) Upload and apply your tattoo!
From the HAJ/HJ2 home page, go to the Tattoo Registry. If you haven't already, activate your free slot (or buy a new one). Upload your design, then rename the tattoo, and voila! You have a usable tattoo of your own! :) Then you just need to add it to your horses via the Tack page.

A couple of my breeds are a singular bone in size, so I only need one BC for those. But a couple of my breeds are open to all bone sizes. I'm trying to figure out which BC's I want to use for them. I want something that looks at least somewhat plausible when crossing different bone sizes. I think I have a good set on my Kampong, which uses Thoroughbred for light bone, Dutch Warmblood for medium and Irish Draught for heavy. These "match" in my brain. I'm having difficulty deciding which ones I want to use for my Serama and Haltanny ("default") breeds. I don't want to use the same ones over and over, since I am subscribed to the BC thing, I want to use lots of different ones. Below I'll list what I'm currently using. Please let me know what combinations you think match/ look good together.

Haltanny/ Default breed - these don't "match", open to change any or all
Light: Saddlebred
Medium: Irish Draught
Heavy: Friesian

Ketawa - prefer not to change
Light: Polish Arabian

Bekisar - open to change
Heavy: Suffolk Punch

Kedu - prefer not to change
Light: Akhal-Teke (M) & (L)

Kampong - these match well? Thoughts?
Light: Thoroughbred
Medium: Dutch Warmblood
Heavy: Irish Draught

Serama - these kind of match?
